Dominion Cabinet Debates - 1867 to 1873

Today, the History 8 class held its third of four Friday debates to decide the future of our new dominion. Assigned the roles of cabinet ministers in Sir John A.'s first government, they receive their 'briefing documents' from their respective 'departments' every Tuesday, and show up on Friday eager and enthusiastic to debate issues as broad as whether or not to purchase Rupert's Land (July 1867) and the need for a police force in the North-West Territory (July 1873). With one debate remaining... the need for a transcontinental railroad (1880)... this new dominion appears to be headed in the right direction. Well done!

MECHANICAL EFFICIENCY (50%)

MECHANICAL EFFICIENCY is the effectiveness of a machine and is defined as mechanical advantage over velocity ratio. To show the effectiveness of a machine one must compare its work input to its work output.

PASCAL'S LAW states that if you apply pressure to fluids that are confined (or can't flow to anywhere), the fluids will then transmit (or send out) that same pressure in all directions at the same rate.

WHAT IS ERGONOMICS? Ergonomics is the study of how your body interacts with your environment when you perform a task or activity. Know examples.

CLASSIFICATION OF LEVERS (Know examples of each)
• Class 1 - The fulcrum lies between the effort and the load
• Class 2 - The fulcrum is at one end, the effort at the other end and the load lies between the effort and the fulcrum

On June 5th, the International Day of the Environment, the Sagrado Corazón School in Spain participated in the Great Environmental Party Galicia. In their stand they gathered 69 supporters (68 from Spain and one from Colombia) for the Youth Accord for Biodiversity.

Every year Friends of Europe is the exclusive partner of the European Commission and organizes a series of debates as part of the official programme. This year our very own Youth Accord Administrator, Kirsten Falkenburger (From Halton, Ontario) sat on the panel to discuss biodiversity and consumers. THEME: YEAR IN REVIEW
The students had some story time with "Rusty" our puppet orangutan.

They learned about the bizarre habits of the local click beetle. This beetle has a flexible joint between the first and second segments of their thorax. When a click beetle is placed on its back, it rights itself by throwing its body into the air with a snapping movement. The same happens when the beetle is right side up, it jumps up, clicks, then falls on its back. See the images above from the Macoun Marsh.

Also the students worked on some more inventions using K'NEX. We have some very creative young scientists! Mr. L.

We continued to examine the grassy areas of the marsh with considerable success. We found many, many bug nymphs, aphids, harvestmen, leaf hoppers, spittlebugs, beetles, dragonflies, moths and butterflies. Flowers in bloom include black locust, a field of sweet rocket, ox-eye daisy, trefoil, and fleabane. Mr. L.

Human DNA Researchers
The Human Genome Project scientists identified all the
over 20,000 parts (called genes) in human DNA. It took 13 years to do this!

Alexander Fleming
One day, before tossing some old experiments away, he made an accidental discovery of a blue mould growing on the plate with some nasty kind of bacteria. The mould seemed to be able to kill off the bacteria. A series of experiments later proved his findings and led to the discovery of penicillin. Penicillin is an important drug that fights against many types of bacteria.

Ignaz Semmelweis
The Hungarian doctor who discovered that the “strange sickness” (Childbed fever) affecting mothers could be reduced by forcing doctors and nurses to wash their hands before operations.

THEME 1: MECHANICAL EFFICIENCY- DEFINITIONS
Energy- The ability to do work.

Work- When a force moves an object.

Force- A push or a pull.

Effort- The force applied to move a load using a simple machine.

Simple machine- Any of the six elementary devices that provide mechanical or other advantage. The six most common simple machines are the: lever, pulley, inclined plane, wedge, screw, and wheel and axle.

Complex machine- A machine that is designed using a number of simple machines, often run by a motor.

Kinetic energy- The energy of motion.

Potential energy- Stored energy.

The students created a series of cards representing the 3 classes of levers.

Try pushing in a nail with your finger and you'll appreciate the advantage a hammer gives you. A tack is a simple machine- When you push on the large, flattened head, the force you apply (to the large flattened end) is effectively magnified because it's concentrated into a much smaller area at the tiny pin head.

THEME: FROG LIFE CYCLE
The male frog clasps the female and fertilizes the eggs as they are shed by the larger female. From 500 to 5,000 eggs are fertilized in this way. The eggs are covered with a jelly which swell with water. Over time the embryo has a tail bud and a sucker. After 6 days the tadpole hatches with external gills, and it clings to plants with its sucker. Over time the legs develop and the tail grows shorter. The metamorphosis is nearly complete at 90+ days. CANADA AVIATION AND SPACE MUSEUM

SPECIAL EVENT
The local Aviation museum has now been renamed the Canada Aviation and Space Museum in order to better showcase aviation and aerospace. We were honoured to have been invited to the launch and to meet Canadian astronaut Dr. Robert Thirsk. As a young boy, he listened to a radio broadcast about John Glenn who had just been launched into space from Florida. This event changed his life and he knew he wanted to be an astronaut one day. From May to December 2009, he became the first Canadian astronaut to fly a long duration expedition aboard the International Space Station, where he lived and worked for 188 days. He told the youth that after seeing what humans are doing to the planet from space he has become an environmentalist. One of our youth had the opportunity to ask Dr. Thirsk to describe the technology used in the washrooms of the International Space Station. Dr. Thirsk responded with a smile and a detailed description that held all the children’s attention! It was a great visit! Mr. L.

MACOUN MARSH CLUB

When you put a group of young naturalists along a pond, it is amazing what can be found! There were many young toad tadpoles in the water. We also found an unusual sawfly known as Nematus. It is new to our species listings (Bottom image). Mr. L.

THEME: IGNAZ PHILIPP SEMMELWEIS AND HAND WASHING
Ignaz Philipp Semmelweis (July 1, 1818 - August 13, 1865) was the Hungarian doctor who showed that "childbed fever" was contagious and that its occurance could be drastically reduced by proper hand-washing by medical care-givers. Unfortunately the doctors of the time did not accept his ideas.

It only took about 10 minutes for the entire class of students to put their hands to their face- one way that those nasty microbes make the journey to the inside of our bodies. The students all took the opportunity to wash their hands! It should be mentioned that not all bacteria are bad for us- some make great cheese and wine! NO HOMEWORK/ Mr. L.

HOBBIT SKULL NEARS COMPLETION!

A tiny 18,000 year old skull discovered in 2003 inspired me to create a life-sized clay model of one of the weirdest discoveries of the past century. Known as the "hobbit", this little person was about the size of a modern three-year-old child. She is now considered to belong to a previously unknown species, Homo floresiensis. The skull was made with air-drying clay, wire and cardboard. The effort in creating the skull is a lot easier than trying to borrow a real specimen from a museum! Mr. L.

THEME: DNA
DNA is the unique information in your body's cells and it is stored as a code made up of four chemical parts. The long word for DNA is deoxyribonucleic acid. All living things have DNA- even wee little bacteria.

Two scientists named James Watson and Francis Crick wrote a very interesting sentence in April 1953.

"This structure has novel features which are of considerable biological interest"

These guys must be kidding! 'Of considerable interest!' They were presenting the structure of the DNA double-helix! It is now considered one of the most important discoveries in the history of science! They would later win a Nobel prize for Physiology or Medicine with this discovery. Many others took part in this discovery, including Maurice Wilkins and Rosalind Franklin. For some strange reason we almost never hear of these researchers. This is changing!

The students also had their test on Scientists of Conservation. A prep sheet went out 2 weeks ago so the children had lots of time to prepare. Mr. L.

A baby bear is called a cub, but a lion, a shark, and a tiger are also called a cub when young! A cow baby is a calf, but a calf is also a baby elephant, whale, and hippo! A baby bird can be called a fledgling, nestling, or a chick. Confused yet?

We need plants to eat to keep healthy.
Plants give us oxygen to breathe.

THEME: CARTILAGINOUS FISHES (Sharks, Rays, Skates, Sawfish)
Cartilaginous fishes have an internal skeleton that is made entirely of cartilage and contains no ossified bone. They are also known as Chondrichthyes and have one or two dorsal fins, a caudal fin, an anal fin, and ventral fins. The students looked at some real shark jaws, teeth, and models. Please finish your images and place them with your other anatomy pictures. Also the flying male carpenter ant (Camponotus pennsylvanicus) above was collected by Anastasia. The following scenario is a "thought experiment."
You and a group are part of an emergency response unit. An accident has just occurred. A robotic dozer has become wedged in a deep drainage pit that you were investigating. The robotic dozer is very heavy- about 100 kg. You have to retrieve it without damaging it.

HOMEWORK: Read page 259 to 262 in your text. Create 2 technical drawings using examples found in your text book. Some objects to draw can include tables, zippers, toys, kitchen-related objects, or clocks. Mr. L.

Our senses are truly alive in spring. The sounds of singing birds and frogs fill the air. The colours of the flowering plants and the red admiral butterflies are like magic. The smells of the lilacs and the garlic mustard tickle your nose! Here are some images of our marsh adventures from today! Also a squirrel skull was found and our little butternut trees are developing leaves. How cool is that! Mr. L.
